The headquarters of Malaysia's Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has been awarded GreenRE Gold green building certification, becoming the first government building in the country to receive the rating. The building was also presented with a Gold energy certificate in recognition of its energy efficiency and sustainability efforts, according to a Nanyang Property report.

The GreenRE chairman handed the certification to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. The minister said the recognition was the result of the collective efforts of KPKT staff, noting that the ministry has long promoted green buildings and sustainable urban development as well as the circular economy.

The KPKT building stands 38 storeys tall with a total floor area of about 117,000 sq m. Minister Nga said it incorporates a range of green features, including an efficient cooling system, solar photovoltaic panels, 100% water-saving fittings, smart air quality monitoring in the car park, electric vehicle charging stations and recycling systems.

According to the minister, the building records an energy intensity of only about 89.9 kWh per sq m per year, reflecting strong energy performance. KPKT's next target is to achieve GreenRE Platinum certification, and the ministry plans to set up a dedicated unit to coordinate and regulate the national green building rating tool.

To encourage more industry players to move towards sustainability and green buildings, Minister Nga said KPKT would formally propose incentive policies, including tax and financing incentives, at a meeting with the Finance Ministry on the following Thursday ahead of the 2027 Budget. The proposals are aimed at pushing private companies in Malaysia to accelerate their sustainable development transition.

The certificate handover ceremony was attended by the KPKT deputy secretary-general, the GreenRE chairman, a GreenRE director and senior KPKT officials.
